English

We take an integrated learning approach to the teaching of English which is built around a diverse mix of high-quality texts. Children are taught the fundamental skills of reading, writing, and speaking and listening, making meaningful links where possible with topics studied in our humanities.

Through these texts, children are exposed to a range of different writing styles and forms. They are able to investigate and recognise how language can be used for a variety of different purposes and audiences, and through language rich texts develop their vocabulary. In addition, these texts underpin our teaching of grammar and punctuation skills providing excellent models.

At Griffin House, we value the importance of reading throughout the school and recognise the ability to read is fundamental to pupils’ development as independent learners. From reception, children are taught phonics daily and in the prep department shared reading, whole class guided reading, and independent reading is encouraged daily.

We actively promote reading for pleasure and encourage our children to read a wide breadth of different types of literature which in turn enhances their writing, improves their grammatical accuracy, and develops their vocabulary.

They are encouraged to read both at home and at school, and reading is further enhanced and celebrated through our World Book Day celebrations, inspiring visiting authors, and inter-house reading challenges.
