Reception have been thinking about the changing seasons this week so after reading some stories set in winter, we decided to go on a winter walk to see what clues we could find. The children were keen to explore around school with their magnifying glasses and camera. We also used our ears to listen, our sense of smell and our hands to touch.
Although it wasn’t cold enough for any ice, we did discover winter plants such as: snowdrops, aconite and winter pansies. We noticed that many trees had lost their leaves and that the rose bushes had no flowers.
We heard the sounds of birds and began to think about which other animals were enjoying the winter and which animals would be hibernating.
The children all used the cameras to capture a winter image and then went on to write a sentence describing it.
